The GOTS was founded in 1986 by orthopaedic surgeons from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The rapidly growing number of members from universities, clinics, outpatient clinics, practices, sports associations and clubs involved in diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation made GOTS the largest and most important sports orthopaedic and traumatology society in the world after the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
GOTS understands sports medicine as holistic, dialogue-oriented medicine and strives for comprehensive synergies between the disciplines of orthopaedics, traumatology, surgery, biomechanics, physiotherapy, physical therapy and sports science.
The GOTS characterises its self-image and activities by linking research and everyday sports medicine within the framework of securing current research results for sports medicine practice. This includes interdisciplinary events and cooperation with international institutes, as well as the involvement of industry. In addition, the GOTS maintains an intensive dialogue with the public, athletes, coaches and associations.
